Tips for dog training at home

In home dog training, there are a series of maxims that must be followed if we want it to work. Training a dog is not easy. It takes a lot of time and commitment. That is why we can say that the most important thing is patience and perseverance. To meet this premise, all you need is time and desire.

To make the task of in home training your dog easier, follow these tips:

  • Orders, better little by little.

It is much easier to teach a puppy than an adult dog. Dogs can follow orders from four months. You should spend a lot of time on each order. And the teaching must be progressive. It is always better to start with the simplest. If your dog listens to you once, this does not mean that he has assimilated the command. It may have been something fortuitous. In any case, before moving on to the next order, make sure he has assimilated the first one. And when you are with the next one, don’t let you forget the previous one. Better to insert orders from time to time so that you do not forget the first ones.

  • Be consistent.

To train consistently is to always give the same orders and in the same way. This doesn’t just mean using the same gestures and words for each command. It also means setting boundaries clearly. For this we must be clear about what we want our dog to do or not do. If we don’t want him to get on the couch, we should never let him do it. What we understand as an exception for the dog may be free. If we leave him once, we can’t expect him to understand that it can’t be. So, if we scold him, he won’t understand why. And remember that these details must be known and followed by all members of the family.

  • More patience, less aggressiveness.

As we have said before, patience is essential in home dog training. Both, your dog and you can get tired or bored. In the case of your dog, if he gets bored, he loses interest and does not learn. In your case, despair can lead to a bit of losing your paper. But, whatever happens, never be aggressive with your dog. That can only lead to anxiety. And so, he will not be able or willing to learn. We also get nothing by punishing him. It is much better and more productive to cheer for him when he is doing well than to blame him when he is not doing well.

Basic commands in home dog training

Once the above points have been considered, we can talk about the most basic and first orders that we must teach our dog.

  • Teach him to come to the call. The very first thing your dog should learn is his name. Taking for granted is the beginning of any order. After this, what he has to learn is to come to the call. This can save you from more than one mess, especially when taking him out for a walk.

Dog paying attention. To teach an order, it is convenient to choose a short word and a gesture. This will be accompanied by a specific tone. For this order, the normal thing is the word «come» and point your finger at our position. To practice this command at home: Stay away from your dog.

Capture their attention by calling their name or tapping their chopsticks. Give the order clearly and firmly. When the dog obeys, it is important to reward him. To do so, there are dog treats. But these treats will only be given very occasionally. It is best to pet him and play with him as a reward.

If your dog does not obey, try closer and insist until he does and relates the command to the action. When he is rewarded, he will want to do it all the time because it will be like a game to him.

  • Teach him to sit. This is another of the basic orders of dog training. This command is especially useful to avoid unwanted situations, such as running after something or crossing the road at a bad time. It also works in case if he bothers you at home at lunchtime, for example.

It is better to start with the command to sit rather than to stand, as this does not involve any movement. Stand next to him, looking at him from above. Choose the word with which you want to give the order. «Sit» is the most common. Accompany this with a hand gesture. The normal thing is that at first, he might ignore you because he doesn´t know what you are asking for. You can start accompanying the order with a few taps on the tail. When he sits down, compliment him.

To get your dog up and we can start over, you can pat your legs. With this gesture he tends to get up and greet you. If it doesn’t work, take a couple of steps and call him. So, you can review the first order.

  • Teach him to stay quiet. At the beginning, instead of moving away from the dog, we will stand by his side. We will start walking and the most normal thing is for the dog to come with us. At a certain point, we will stop while we call him by his name and say “STOP!”, Pointing at him with the finger or the palm of the hand. We will do this several times, walking throughout the house. We can also try to stop, to see if he stops with us or continues. This is very practical for ride time. This makes it more likely that you will not pull on the leash when walking.

When we see that this works and that the dog responds to our command, we are going to try something different. Tell him to sit down and get away from him. When you are as far away as you can, call him. Halfway there, say «STOP!» If he stops, try going back to the previous command: «SIT!» And when he does, go back to the first command: «COME!» Finally, go through all the orders.

Remember to congratulate him when he reaches you in home dog training. You can also try putting some food or a toy that he likes a lot and ask him to be still in front of that. The prize, if he obeys, will be this meal. But this doesn’t work for first time, so be patient.
